How does creativity work for entrepreneurs? What is the most important quality of an entrepreneur? How many of you would argue it is passion, an overwhelming love of what you are doing, and the drive and determination to see your dreams realized? Some others might say leadership, the ability to bring a team of people together and guide them towards a common goal. A lot of others think creativity is a boundless imagination that is always innovating.
Creativity for many is seeing the world through a different lens and seeing it as the ultimate key to success any business. Creativity is a powerful entrepreneurial force, and when you understand how to manifest it, you will use it for the good of many. Most educational institutions and businesses still value intelligence over creativity. Both creativity and intelligence are seen this way because knowledge is easier to quantify, easier to manage, and easier to identify, whereas creativity can be difficult to spot.
Research shows us that most creative people often struggle in school. When one struggles, it makes it hard to discern the difference between a potential troublemaker and a genuinely creative person, who could bring significant benefits to the situation at hand. The ability to channel your creativity for the good of all will bring rewards for you and many others. A business when working with lots of individuals should consider hiring for creativity in addition to intelligence. Creativity needs structure to flourish, but not so much structure that it is crushed.
Creativity can be learned. Everyone has creative potential, and the creative thought process can be improved and strengthened. Learning new hobbies and skills is a great way to lay down new neural networks, but learning a new art form is one of the best methods to train the mind in developing creative problem-solving skills. The skills require the use of divergent thinking, which is the half of original thought that is typically missing in corporate America and if you are an entrepreneur that is not what you want in your business.
Creativity happens best at the intersection of disciplines. Most breakthrough discoveries occur when two or more disciplines collide. Most people are afraid of collisions, but creative disagreements are to be encouraged because they allow you to view a problem from a new perspective. Creative problem-solvers are often able to connect two distinct areas of expertise and can translate potential solutions from one field to a separate area.
Many times in today’s world there is little time to no time allocated towards real thinking and brainstorming or even experimentation without judgment. With so much pressure to produce quick results in the current economic environment, it may seem like a luxury to walk away from the mountain of tasks that you see to complete. What you need to understand is that your creativity is what makes your life fun and is what gets you excited each and every day you wake up in the morning.
“Creativity is more than just being different.” Anybody can plan weird; that’s easy. What’s hard is to be as simple as Bach. Making the simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity” – Charles Mingus
