When one uses the expression “comfort zone” it has an indisputable gravitational pull but, remember that too much of a good thing is not always good. Taking chances outside of your comfort zones can be just as rewarding even when you might be afraid and scared to death. What you want to do is challenge yourself in ways that will add to your growth, aiding you with your purpose for being here and adding to your personal development in this lifetime.
Why not start to think of the term comfort zone differently? Look upon comfort zone as an area of mediocrity, a flat area and a humdrum space and place that you do not wish to reside. A comfort zone can be a haven but, not necessarily a place where exhilaration and growth occur. In the real world, truth be told your comfort zone can also be stagnant, and it can be quite difficult for you to see this as a problem on your own.
What then would be the issue with having a comfort zone? The underlying problem is that you can’t move into new territory by staying in your comfort zone. What we know now and you will agree is that people only regret the chances that they did not take in life. Disappointed more by the things that you did not do than by those things which you tried and failed to do. Staying in the comfort zone does not give you the chance to try all those new things that you think about and dream of doing.
Here are a few ways that you can begin to make change and get out of your way, start with one and then incorporate all of these steps:
Begin trying new things – Take baby steps, try a new food, a new dance or exercise that you think you might like, start small. It is always good to work with a friend that you enjoy sharing experiences with and feel relaxed around. Over time, you can then move on to taking bigger calculated risk all by yourself.
Learn to risk effectively – Get to understand the difference between a calculated risk and a pure gamble. A calculated risk is the one where you can identify the odds of individual results, and thus make an informed choice. When it is a pure gamble, it is leaving a decision completely and utterly up to chance. You want to learn and be about making decisions with calculated risks and walk away from complete pure gambles.
Identify and be honest with what you are afraid of and own it – You want to own them not the other way around. It will be one of the most important steps in moving past your limitations. Work to understand your fears and then begin to face them head on one at a time, conquer. Don’t forget to find the humor in the journey you are about to take and be willing to laugh about it. When you can laugh at yourself, it becomes more important than talent, strength, or knowledge and will aid you in the pursuit of your dreams.
Once you decide that it is OK to feel embarrassed or uncertain, you are on your way. Then you are making a transition into new territory that you have no personal history of and one that will help you to navigate through it. Give yourself permission to feel uncomfortable and afraid as you embark upon something new that will take you out of your comfort zone. What you will discover over time is that taking a chance on you pays off, and you will applaud yourself.
Until the next time, take good care and be well.
