When you value yourself it is not conceit, and nor is it vanity – it recognizes that you have basic inherent skills, traits, and personality that makes you a person of value. It is far from being perfect, but it is about accepting that you have as many faults as you have traits to be admired. Once you begin to recognize and acknowledge that you have some qualities that are not working to your best advantage, you can start to do something about it.
Here is a list of skills that you can begin to implement that will support you to start to build and value yourself and build your self-esteem in the process.
Stop The Comparisons
Recognize that when you accept yourself as you are it is easier to take the next step because there is no beating yourself up for what is ahead but, but rather encouraging yourself for what you might become. No more comparing yourself to successful people and wondering why you cannot have it all, now you begin your journey to the discovery of the power of you and your purpose.
We all make mistakes; sometimes it’s a big one and sometimes not, but mistakes are a part of life ( and it might be argued that we only progress through mistakes). Recognize that it may have been wrong and that you may have learned something, but that continually punishing you is, in fact, compounding the errors by holding you back further.
Look After Yourself
Sometimes you just have to say I am the priority; I am a higher value than those things that need my attention right now. I am not well/rested/feeling ok, so I am going to value myself enough to take time for me.
Connect With Others
As you connect with family and friends, notice what it is they value about you and allow yourself to accept compliments. If you find that difficult, start with a simple “thank you” and feel how positive it is to have someone notice something good about you, begin now. Remember that criticism is just that, and if you think it’s not worth listening to and you reject it, that’s OK. It is your choice – you are the expert on you, not the people who criticize you and your actions.
Celebrate Your Successes
It is great to remind yourself of what you have achieved and to do it often. Get into the habit of valuing yourself because it will help to build your self-esteem and self-worth; both will contribute to insulate you against the emotional challenges that fall into our lives from time to time. If you feel that you need some professional help to get started, it will be an excellent beginning. Taking small steps as you begin will make a big difference quickly, and it will benefit the need that you have to discover your real value.
Until the next time, take good care and be well.
